About the song

“Mr. Lonely” is a poignant and deeply resonant song co-written and recorded by American singer Bobby Vinton, with backing by Robert Mersey and his Orchestra. Initially released on Vinton’s 1962 album *Roses Are Red*, the song tells the heart-wrenching story of a soldier sent overseas, isolated from home and yearning for connection. This emotional narrative, born from Vinton’s own experiences while serving in the Army during the late 1950s, captures the essence of loneliness felt by many servicemen.

The timing of its release as a single was particularly significant, coinciding with the escalation of the Vietnam War. Many soldiers found themselves in situations similar to the one depicted in the song, which amplified its impact and relevance. Vinton’s emotional delivery, especially his sobbing in the second verse, added an authentic touch that resonated deeply with listeners.

Despite Vinton’s success with “Roses Are Red,” Epic Records was initially hesitant to release “Mr. Lonely” as a single, instead opting for “Rain Rain Go Away.” They gave “Mr. Lonely” to Buddy Greco, whose version reached No. 64 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1962. Vinton’s label initially viewed him more as a musician and songwriter than a vocalist. However, Vinton’s continued success as a singer led to a change in perception within the label.

When Vinton had the opportunity to select the final track for his greatest-hits album, he chose “Mr. Lonely.” Its inclusion sparked renewed interest, especially from radio disc jockeys who remembered Greco’s version and Vinton’s thwarted attempts to release it. The growing demand led to the song being released as a single, where it quickly became one of Vinton’s signature hits.

“Mr. Lonely” spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the No. 1 spot on December 12, 1964. It also climbed to No. 3 on Billboard’s Middle-Road Singles chart. Internationally, the song resonated just as powerfully, reaching No. 1 on Canada’s RPM “Top 40 & 5” chart, No. 2 on New Zealand’s “Lever Hit Parade,” No. 8 in Australia, and securing a top 3 position in South Africa.

The song’s emotional depth and relatability made it a favorite among servicemen worldwide, solidifying Bobby Vinton’s place as one of the most beloved artists of his era. “Mr. Lonely” remains a timeless classic, reflecting the universal longing for connection and the enduring impact of isolation.

Lyrics

Lonely, I’m Mr. Lonely
I have nobody for my own
I’m so lonely, I’m Mr. Lonely
Wish I had someone to call on the phone

I’m a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
That’s why I’m lonely, I’m Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home

Letters, never a letter
I get no letters in the mail
I’ve been forgotten, yeah, forgotten
Oh, how I wonder how is it I failed

Now I’m a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
That’s why I’m lonely, I’m Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home
